Foundation Stone unveiled by Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, June 27th, 1997 | This extended care nursing facility was filled to capacity. In keeping with the high standards for a prestigious Institution, a demanding project was developed involving an addition wrapping around three of the buildings four sides. The terracing, five storey high wrap addition, included new underground parking under the old building as well. To excavating every inch of the property tight to the property lines, we utilized a complex combination of caisson soldier pile shoring and conventional shoring. The existing five story facility was left fully operational in the middle of heavy construction, practically sitting in the air, as we underpinned most of the buildings footings by one to two meters in depth. Temporary bridges high over the construction allowed the facility to remain fully operational at all times. Building in Toronto's congested Chinatown, (Spadina and Dundas area) with only a one-lane one-way street to the front and a narrow shared laneway to the back added to this challenge.
